SOUND SYSTEM TECH - EPISODE ONE

Put on your geek glasses, time for some basic technical information concerning sound systems. Since designing a really good sound system is a complex, scientific process.

Sound for Underground Dance:
The Technical Foundation

The essential technical details for the design, configuration, and optimization of sound systems for the foundational characteristics of dance music shared by sunsonic. This guide does not imply to everyones needs I am aware of that.. but some people involved in a sound system might lack some basic knowledge. This is a good way to get your started.

Introduction (excerpt)

Any combination of low-grade speakers and amplifiers are enough to make some noise, but the accurate reproduction of music, with flat frequency and phase response across the entire audible spectrum, at high volume levels, is a science and art that still has plenty of room for improvement, and that will continue to evolve for centuries to come. Tradeoffs are made by all audio equipment manufacturers between accuracy in frequency and phase response, efficiency, equipment volume and weight, and materials and R&D costs. For many applications, such as a low-cost public address system or guitar amp, 1950's era technology works fine. But for the world's largest and most successful sound companies, there is no settling for less than the best.

The fundamentals of connecting various pieces of equipment together and operating a sound system are not covered here, as there are many other reference materials that explain the basics of sound systems, such as Yamaha's classic Sound Reinforcement Handbook. Due to the small size and non-mainstream nature of the underground dance music market however, sound schools, books, and other educational resources do not devote much, if any, attention to its specific needs. This document illustrates the main design issues for electronic dance music, and explains why its unique characteristics often require a unique approach. With an understanding of the principles covered here, you'll be better able to set up a sound system that makes dance music sound as good as it can.

Concerning the Yamaha's classic Sound Reinforcement Handbook featured in this guide. You could buy it if you want to read it.. or grab it here (from an anonymous source ;D)

"Sound reinforcement is the use of audio amplification systems. This book is the first and only book."

WRITINGS OF EMMA GOLDMAN

Anarchism: What It Really Stands For
If you are looking for some interesting literature then stop searching because here it is.. "Anarchism: What is Really Stands For" by Emma Goldman, an anarchist known for her political activism, writing and speeches. She played a pivotal role in the development of anarchist political philosophy in North America and Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. (wiki)

paragraph on direct action (excerpt)

Direct action, having proven effective along economic lines, is equally potent in the environment of the individual. There a hundred forces encroach upon his being, and only persistent resistance to them will finally set him free. Direct action against the authority in the shop, direct action against the authority of the law, direct action against the invasive, meddlesome authority of our moral code, is the logical, consistent method of Anarchism.

Will it not lead to a revolution? Indeed, it will. No real social change has ever come about without a revolution. People are either not familiar with their history, or they have not yet learned that revolution is but thought carried into action.

CROSSBONES SOUNDSYSTEM

CROSSBONES SOUND SYSTEM

Hardcore label from the U.K. pushing the doomcore sound pioneered by the likes of Marc Acardipane and run by the guys from the Crossbones Sound System based in London. Releases are distributed worldwide exclusively through Phuture Rave (also owned by Crossbones). @discogs @fakebook

Doomcore in once sentence is "taking the nightmarish vibe of a squat party K-hole and putting it to music". A sludgy kick drum, extensive and imaginative horror sampling, real occult imagery and extremely lo-fi production value are the hallmarks, and make for a genuinely unsettling experience. excerpt datatransmissionIn the late '90s the Bones crew took part in many underground free parties in London squats and across the UK. They quit the scene when ketamine and crack took over the squat raves.. Must have been hard to give up something that beautiful all because people forgot it is about the music.. not the drugs. Sadly enough that is not the first time that has happen..

"RAVE FRONTIER" - documentary featuring the crew

Here is a quote from a fellow blogger Simon R.

"If i was living in London I'd hop along to this event, if only to check out legendary East London acieeed-crypt The Dungeons. Plus Crossbones, this phuture tekno squat-rave sound system/record label I mentioned months ago, are just about the UK's sole solitary squad of PCP-aligned doomtroopers. Opportunities to experience Mover-style gloomcore through a big system in the midst of a headstrong throng of drug-fucked darkrave zombie-warriors stomping til the crack of dawn and beyond do not come along too often these days, I would go if I were you!" source blissblog

p.s. major thanks again to my good friend The Taxidermist to get me hooked on doomcore!

BRAZIL

All I can say is.. SIMPLY BRILLIANT!

Brazil is a 1985 science fiction fantasy film directed by Terry Gilliam. It was written by Gilliam, Charles McKeown, and Tom Stoppard and stars Jonathan Pryce. The film also features Robert De Niro, Kim Greist, Michael Palin, Katherine Helmond, Bob Hoskins, and Ian Holm. John Scalzi's Rough Guide to Sci-Fi Movies describes the film as a "dystopian satire".

The film centres on Sam Lowry (Pryce), a man trying to find a woman who appears in his dreams while he is working in a mind-numbing job and living a life in a small apartment, set in a dystopian world in which there is an over-reliance on poorly maintained (and rather whimsical) machines. Brazil's bureaucratic, totalitarian government is reminiscent of the government depicted in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, except that it has a buffoonish, slapstick quality and lacks a 'Big Brother' figure.

Jack Mathews, film critic and author of The Battle of Brazil (1987), described the film as "satirizing the bureaucratic, largely dysfunctional industrial world that had been driving Gilliam crazy all his life". Though a success in Europe, the film was unsuccessful in its initial North America release. It has since become a cult film.

runtime is over 2,5 hours so it is quiet a download.. those who are not gifted with a rapidshare account might want to find another way to obtain this masterpiece. Hell.. why not just buy it? That would be new.. for me ;D

RIP BDK

In Memory of Peter Mosalyk.
aka Belladonnakillz or The Marquis

Today I have recieved some very tragic news.
My good friend of 10 years, Peter Moskalyk has passed away as the result of an overdose.

Known by many as Belladonnakillz, he was a very talented musician.

His music consisted of a unique mix of breakcore, drum and bass, and various broken beats along side his live singing.

He gave a unique performance of great skill and technique.
He was an excellent, concert level pianist.
From Phillip Glass to Chopin, he could play better than anyone I'd ever seen.

Creator of "Smerk" around the year 2001, he was one of the key figures in the Toronto hardcore scene. Organizing several, once a month parties in downtown Toronto in "The big bop", a venue which is now being torn down and replaced with a chain furniture store.

He toured the world with his show, from Toronto to Montreal, to Holland to Russia.
Worked with many top producers including The Panacea and Lenny Dee, and was featured on several vinyl releases and compilations.

Always fun to be around, with a great sense of humor, much creativity, and an intense love of music, he was always ready to party, and loved to have a great time.

He had battled with addiction for a long time, and seemed to be coming out of it, as he had just finished a college course in City Planning and finished his latest tour of Europe.

It seemed he had now a bright future ahead of him.
So to hear this sad news is painful and tragic.

Always a flamboyant personality, he lived life to its fullest, he was a true rockstar.
He will live on forever in his music.

Peter, we'll miss you buddy.

My condolences to his friends, family and to all his fans and supporters worldwide.

KFA 028 @discogs

One of those bands (artist) that got my interest few years ago.. as part of my periode I used to like breakcore. But that is far less important than what happend.
Sad loss. rip.

EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP

My partner in crime posted about this movie when it was announced and it was released in my absence about a month ago. But better too late than never.. here it is.

EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP

The story of how an eccentric French shop keeper and amateur film maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner with spectacular results. Billed as 'the world's first street art disaster movie' the film contains exclusive footage of Banksy, Shephard Fairey, Invader and many of the world's most infamous graffiti artists at work.
