THE ULTIMATE BAD-ASS

"You want to know about voting? I’m here to tell you about voting.

Imagine you’re locked in a huge underground nightclub filled with sinners, whores, freaks and unnameable things that rape pit bulls for fun. And you ain’t allowed out until you all vote on what you’re going to do tonight. You like to put your feet up and watch “Republican Party Reservation.” They like to have sex with normal people using knives, guns, and brand new sexual organs that you did not know existed. So you vote for television and everyone else, as far as your eye can see, votes to fuck you with switchblades.

That’s voting. You’re welcome." - Spider Jerusalem on democracy

A fearless seeker of truth, god among journalists, drug enthusiast, heavy drinker,
chain smoker and a governments biggest nightmare. Spider Jerusalem is by far my most favorite comic book character ever. We have suggested reading TRANSMETROPOLITAN a few times before and will continue to do so because it is a masterpiece of philosophical and literary depth. A perfect example of how a comic can be just as inspiring, educational and eye-opening as a well written book.

Of course paperback copies are more fun to read and in this case definitely worth buying at your local comic book store, but not everyone has the ability to do so. Therefor downloading is a good alternative. CDisplay is a great viewer for reading digital comics.

SPIDER JERUZALEM

By Warren Ellis

--
Once more I ask your attention for Transmetropolitan, because it's one of the best comic book series I have ever read. Although situated in a nearby dark future, it reflects our crooked society in many ways.
The ones who might wonder what a comic can teach you about freedom/society/culture/journalism, might be in for a surprise.

THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS

Written by Frank Miller;
Art and Cover by Miller and Klaus Janson

 --
"It's film noir in cartoon pane ls."
—VANITY FAIR

"There's never been storytelling quite like this."
— THE WASHINGTON POST

"Changed the course of comics."
—ROLLING STONE
 --

Hailed as a comics masterpiece, THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS is Frank Miller's (300 and Sin City) reinvention of the legend of Batman. It remains an undisputed classic, one of the most influential stories ever told in comics, and is a book cited by the filmmakers as an inspiration for the most recent Batman movies.

It is ten years after an aging Batman has retired, and Gotham City has sunk deeper into decadence and lawlessness. Now, when his city needs him most, the Dark Knight returns in a blaze of glory. Joined by Carrie Kelly, a teenage female Robin, Batman takes to the streets to end the threat of the mutant gangs that have overrun the city. And after facing off against his two greatest enemies, the Joker and Two-Face, for the final time, Batman finds himself in mortal combat with his former ally, Superman, in a battle that only one of them will survive.

FRANK MILLER - THE ART OF SIN CITY

ART BOOK
In 1991, visionary creator Frank Miller continued his shakedown of the comics industry when he premiered his visceral and powerfully charged Sin City series. With Sin City, Miller sent a shock wave through the industry and beyond, stunning critics and amazing readers, the after-effects of which are still being felt today. While Miller is primarily praised for his outstanding stories, it is his breathtaking artwork that continues to shine on. To honor the artist and his groundbreaking work, Dark Horse Comics is pleased to present Frank Miller: The Art of Sin City, a unique and handsomely cloth bound hardcover coffee-table book, containing pieces both published and unpublished — some never-before-seen by the public. Printed on glossy 100 lb. coated paper and featuring items ranging from preliminary sketches to promotional pieces, this beautiful edition holds everything a Sin City fan, or connoisseur of fine art, could ever hope for.

R. STEADMAN

 --
If the name Ralph Steadman doesn't ring a bell, how about Hunter S. Thompson or "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?"
Ralph Steadman was the artist who did all the original artwork for Hunter S. Thompson and had a huge role in the way the movie for "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" was produced.
Steadman had a long partnership with the American journalist Hunter S. Thompson, drawing pictures for several of his articles and books. He accompanied Thompson to the Kentucky Derby for an article for the magazine Scanlan's, to the Honolulu Marathon for the magazine Running, and illustrated both Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. Much of Steadman's artwork revolves around Raoul Duke-style caricatures of Thompson: bucket hats, cigarette holder and aviator sunglasses.

V FOR VENDETTA

V for Vendetta is a ten-issue comic-book series written by Alan Moore and illustrated mostly by David Lloyd, set in a dystopian future United Kingdom imagined from the 1980s about the 1990s. A mysterious revolutionary who calls himself "V" works to destroy the totalitarian government, profoundly affecting the people he encounters.

The series depicts a near-future Britain after a limited nuclear war, which has left much of the world destroyed. In this future, a fascist party called "Norsefire" has arisen as the ruling power. "V", an anarchist revolutionary dressed in a Guy Fawkes mask, begins an elaborate, violent, and theatrical campaign to bring down the government. Warner Bros. released a film adaptation in 2005.

WATCHMEN

Forget the movie, read the graphic novel. Ranking number one in Time magazine's
Top 100, this novel  is by far one of the best I've ever read!
 --
Watchmen is a twelve-issue comic book limited series created by writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins. The series was published by DC Comics during 1986 and 1987, and has been subsequently reprinted into collected form. Watchmen originated from a story proposal Moore submitted to DC featuring superhero characters that the company had acquired from Charlton Comics. As Moore's proposed story would have left many of the characters unusable for future stories, managing editor Dick Giordano convinced the writer to create original characters instead.

Moore used the story as a means to reflect contemporary anxieties and to critique the superhero concept. Watchmen takes place on an alternate history Earth where superheroes emerged in the 1940s and 1960s, helping the United States to win the Vietnam War. The country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union, freelance costumed vigilantes have been outlawed and most costumed superheroes are in retirement or working for the government. The story focuses on the personal development and struggles of the protagonists as an investigation into the murder of a government sponsored superhero pulls them out of retirement, and eventually leads them to confront a plot to stave off nuclear war by killing millions of people.

Creatively, the focus of Watchmen is on its structure. Gibbons used a nine-panel grid layout throughout the series and added recurring symbols such as a blood-stained smiley. All but the last issue feature supplemental fictional documents that add to the series' backstory, and the narrative is intertwined with that of another story, a fictional pirate comic titled Tales of the Black Freighter, which one of the characters reads. Structured as a nonlinear narrative, the story skips through space, time and plot. Watchmen has received critical acclaim both in the comics and mainstream press, and is regarded by critics as a seminal text of the comics medium.

WASTELAND

Wasteland takes place in a devastated, post-apocalyptic future America. Set one hundred years after a catastrophe known as the ‘Big Wet’, it's the story of Michael and Abi, two characters with unique and unnatural powers, as they search for the fabled land of A-Ree-Yass-I; which legend says is where the Big Wet began.

Their quest will take them thousands of miles across a ruined, hostile land where technology has been forgotten and scavenging is a way of life. Where a relentless sun beats down through a cloudless sky. Where no birds take to the air, no forests carpet the hills. Where the oceans are fetid and poisonous, impossible to cross.

But Michael has been walking this land longer than he can remember. If anyone can beat the odds and survive the journey, Abi believes it's him. With his survival skills and her quick thinking, can they find A-Ree-Yass-I together?

Perhaps. But along the way they'll face betrayal, prejudice, war, revolution and more...

TIME MANAGEMENT FOR ANARCHISTS

Time Management for Anarchists by Jim Munroe, a comic based on a slideshow Jim does

In Jim’s slideshow, he talks about how important it is for a creative person to keep a day planner/calendar and write things down. It seems a stretch to move on to prayer, but really, all prayer is is a daily recitation of your hopes and dreams—it’s a way of verbalizing your desires and organizing your thoughts, which is exactly what writing is.

NOT JUST FOR ANARCHISTS!

ART IS MAGIC _ ALAN MOORE

ALAN MOORE -writer, artist and performer- is the world's most critically acclaimed and widely admired creator of comic books and graphic novels.
In The Mindscape of Alan Moore we see a portrait of the artist as contemporary shaman, someone with the power to transform consciousness by means of manipulating language, symbols and images.
The film leads the audience through Moore's world with the writer himself as guide, beginning with his childhood background, following the evolution of his career as he transformed the comics medium, through to his immersion in a magical worldview where science, spirituality and society are part of the same universe.
The Mindscape of Alan Moore is an audiovisual document of utmost relevance in the wake of current global developments.

TRANSMETROPOLITAN

Transmetropolitan is a post-cyberpunk comic book series written by Warren Ellis with art by Darick Robertson and published by DC Comics. The series was originally part of the short-lived DC Comics imprint Helix, but upon the end of the book's first year the series was moved to the Vertigo imprint as DC Comics cancelled the Helix imprint. It chronicles the battles of Spider Jerusalem, infamous renegade gonzo journalist of the future, an homage to gonzo journalism founder Hunter S. Thompson.

Spider Jerusalem dedicates himself to fighting the corruption and abuse of power of two successive United States presidents; he and his ("filthy") assistants strive to keep their world from turning more dystopian than it already is while dealing with the struggles of fame and power, brought about due to the popularity of Spider via his articles.

"These are the streets of this city, where the New Scum try to live. You and me, and here in these streets are the things that we want: sex and birth, votes and traits, money and guilt, television and teddy bears. But all we've actually got is each other. You decide what that means."

“We live in a monoculture. What does that mean? Well, go out to your street corner. You’ll probably see a Long Pig stand, SPKF on a screen somewhere, an Angry Boy Dylan’s Gun Store. You’ll go into a record store and see new recordings by the usual suspects, maybe a special Space Culture display rack.

Go out onto a streetcorner in London and you’ll see the same thing. Same in Prague. Same in Sao Paulo. Same in Osaka, and Grozny, and Tehran, and Jo’burg, and Hobart. That’s what a monoculture is. It’s everywhere, and it’s all the same. And it takes up alien cultures and digests them and shits them out in a homogeneous building-block shape that fits seamlessly into the vast blank wall of the monoculture.

This is the future. This is what we built. This is what we wanted. It must have been. Because we all had a fucking choice, didn’t we? It is only our money that allows commercial culture to
flower. If we didn’t want to live like this, we could have changed it any time, by not fucking paying for it.

So let’s celebrate by all going out and buying the same burger.”
