VIVIR LA UTOPIA

(Spanish with English subtitles)

Living Utopia is a unique documentary that blends the historical account of the origins and development of the Spanish anarchist movement, and the revolution of 1936 — illustrating an anarchist society in action.

Workers opened communal cafes where people could eat for free. Communities set up food committees to arrange food supply with the countryside — market commerce and money was replaced in many areas by distribution according to need. Free schools, universities and health programs were set up and administrated by the workers themselves. Rural areas were collectivised. This experience, in which about 8 million people participated, showed that anarchist organisation of society could indeed work in practice. It truly was a Living Utopia.

This documentary-film by Juan Gamero consists of 30 interviews with those involved, and is both an informative and inspiring piece of research. The testimonies of the anarchist militants are very moving and show the constructive work of the social revolution in Spain, as well as the amazing educational and cultural events which lead up to 1936. Interviews are combined with visual materials such as manifestos, photographs, excerpts from film documentaries, portraits and other relevant graphical elements.

REVOLUTION OR REVOLUTION

revolution & Revolution

There seems to be, in anarchist (and probably all radical) circles, this idea of The Revolution. A mythical day always just a few years away when the people will all rise up and throw off their chains, finally seeing the light and becoming truly free.

This comes from an idealization of past revolutions and is neither fair to the revolutionaries who participated nor is it fair to us. They were no “better” than we are, except perhaps in understanding that all the armchair philosophy in the world isn’t going to make things better.

That’s why they went out and did it. And by “it” I don’t mean a full scale insurrection, though that happened sometimes. I mean helping those who need it, forming groups to disseminate information to the public at large, working together to provide food and healthcare to those who couldn’t afford it, etc.

It is these “small revolutions,” these ways of taking back control here and now, that will inspire people. It is these small, itty bitty revolutions that show how we, not by handing over our desires to experts to tell us whether or not they’re feasible, but by finding a way to make shit happen, prove that voluntary cooperation is not only freer but more effective than anything the state attempts to do.

When Food Not Bombs feeds more people for less money than some state-funded soup kitchen, it not only creates allies, but it reveals the state for the hulking mass of ineptitude that it is.

Pirate radio stations, shared transportation, infoshops… these aren’t a joke. They aren’t “small time.” They’re the whole shebang. They’re the core of what we’re doing. They are anarchy existing under the state, and they are the slight hope that maybe, just maybe, once we get the ball rolling, we’ll get our Revolution after all.

Thousands have been locked up since the insurrection, police chase many others, and the state seemingly have social consensus from the mass of citizens for a more fascist Britain, but the fresh blast of freedom has filled our lungs and state terror won’t stop us.

ALDOUS HUXLEY - THE ULTIMATE REVOLUTION

"The Ultimate Revolution"
by Aldous Huxley

(source: Internet Archive)

March 20, 1962 Berkeley Language Center - Speech Archive SA 0269

"And here I would like briefly to compare the parable of Brave New World with another parable which was put forth more recently in George Orwell's book, Nineteen Eighty- Four. Orwell wrote his book between, I think between 45 and 48 at the time when the Stalinist terror regime was still in Full swing and just after the collapse of the Hitlerian terror regime. And his book which I admire greatly, it's a book of very great talent and extraordinary ingenuity, shows, so to say, a projection into the future of the immediate past, of what for him was the immediate past, and the immediate present, it was a projection into the future of a society where control was exercised wholly by terrorism and violent attacks upon the mind-body of individuals.

Whereas my own book which was written in 1932 when there was only a mild dictatorship in the form of Mussolini in existence, was not overshadowed by the idea of terrorism, and I was therefore free in a way in which Orwell was not free, to think about these other methods of control, these non-violent methods and my, I'm inclined to think that the scientific dictatorships of the future, and I think there are going to be scientific dictatorships in many parts of the world, will be probably a good deal nearer to the brave new world pattern than to the 1984 pattern, they will a good deal nearer not because of any humanitarian qualms of the scientific dictators but simply because the BNW pattern is probably a good deal more efficient than the other."

(excerpt from the transcript)

"It seems to me that the nature of the ultimate revolution with which we are now faced is precisely this, that we are in process of developing a whole series of techniques which will enable the controlling oligarchy, who have always existed and presumably always will exist, to get people actually to love their servitude. This seems to me the ultimate malevolent revolution... This is a problem which has interested me for many years and about which I wrote, 30 years ago, a fable Brave New World which is essentially the account of a society making use of all the devices at that time available and some of the devices which I imagined to be possible, making use of them in order to, first of all, to standardize the population, to iron out inconvenient human differences, to create, so to say, mass produced models of human beings arranged in some kind of a scientific caste system. Since then I have continued to be extremely interested in this problem and I have noticed with increasing dismay that a number of the predictions which were purely fantastic when I made them 30 years ago have come true or seem in process of coming true. A number of techniques about which I talked seem to be here already, and that there seems to be a general movement in the direction of this kind of ultimate revolution, this method of control by which people can be made to enjoy a state of affairs which by any decent standard they ought not to enjoy. I mean the enjoyment of servitude."

FROM DICTATORSHIP TO DEMOCRACY

 --
Gene Sharp is the world's foremost expert on non-violent revolution. His work has been translated into more than 30 languages, his books slipped across borders and hidden from secret policemen all over the world.

His central message is that the power of dictatorships comes from the willing obedience of the people they govern - and that if the people can develop techniques of withholding their consent, a regime will crumble.

OCCUPY PARIS ANNO 1871

The Paris Commune (French: La Commune de Paris) was a government that briefly ruled Paris from March 18 (more formally, from March 28) to May 28, 1871. It existed before the split between anarchists and Marxists had taken place, and it is hailed by both groups as the first assumption of power by the working class during the Industrial Revolution. Debates over the policies and outcome of the Commune contributed to the break between those two political groups.

In a formal sense, the Paris Commune simply acted as the local authority, the city council (in French, the "commune"), which exercised power in Paris for two months in the spring of 1871. However, the conditions in which it formed, its controversial decrees, and its violent end make its tenure one of the more important political episodes of the time.

THE FREEDOM CHARTER

 THE FREEDOM CHARTER
street art set to video by Rowan Pybus & Faith47

Characterized by its opening demand - “The People Shall Govern!” , the original Freedom Charter was a statement of core principles of the South African Congress Alliance, created in 1955. The Charter was created from words collected by fifty thousand volunteers, who went out into townships and the countryside to collect ‘freedom demands’ from the people. Ratified by The People, and designed to give all South Africans equal rights, the Freedom Charter was denounced and buried when the ANC was banned. The original Freedom Charter couldn’t be killed by apartheid however, and it has re-emerged within the revolutionary underground of South Africa in various guises since that time. This video showcases the work of talented female South African street artist Faith47, and includes some of the original demands 0f the Charter such as “Land to be given to all landless people”, “Living wages and shorter hours of work”, “Free and compulsory education, irrespective of colour, race or nationality”.

ERROR DEL SISTEMA

Madrid, Spain

After all the uprisings in the middle east, finally people in Europe stand up to their government too. The centre square in Madrid is taken over by thousands of protestors.

MANIFESTO
"We are ordinary people. We are like you: people, who get up every morning to study, work or find a job, people who have family and friends. People, who work hard every day to provide a better future for those around us.
Some of us consider ourselves progressive, others conservative. Some of us are believers, some not. Some of us have clearly defined ideologies, others are apolitical, but we are all concerned and angry about the political, economic, and social outlook which we see around us: corruption among politicians, businessmen, bankers, leaving us helpless, without a voice.
This situation has become normal, a daily suffering, without hope. But if we join forces, we can change it. It’s time to change things, time to build a better society together. Therefore, we strongly argue that:

  • The priorities of any advanced society must be equality, progress, solidarity, freedom of culture, sustainability and development, welfare and people’s happiness.
  • These are inalienable truths that we should abide by in our society: the right to housing, employment, culture, health, education, political participation, free personal development, and consumer rights for a healthy and happy life.
  • The current status of our government and economic system does not take care of these rights, and in many ways is an obstacle to human progress.
  • Democracy belongs to the people (demos = people, krátos = government) which means that government is made of every one of us. However, in Spain most of the political class does not even listen to us. Politicians should be bringing our voice to the institutions, facilitating the political participation of citizens through direct channels that provide the greatest benefit to the wider society, not to get rich and prosper at our expense, attending only to the dictatorship of major economic powers and holding them in power through a bipartidism headed by the immovable acronym PP & PSOE.
  • Lust for power and its accumulation in only a few; create inequality, tension and injustice, which leads to violence, which we reject. The obsolete and unnatural economic model fuels the social machinery in a growing spiral that consumes itself by enriching a few and sends into poverty the rest. Until the collapse.
  • The will and purpose of the current system is the accumulation of money, not regarding efficiency and the welfare of society. Wasting resources, destroying the planet, creating unemployment and unhappy consumers.
  • Citizens are the gears of a machine designed to enrich a minority which does not regard our needs. We are anonymous, but without us none of this would exist, because we move the world.
  • If as a society we learn to not trust our future to an abstract economy, which never returns benefits for the most, we can eliminate the abuse that we are all suffering.
  • We need an ethical revolution. Instead of placing money above human beings, we shall put it back to our service. We are people, not products. I am not a product of what I buy, why I buy and who I buy from."
For all of the above, I am outraged.
I think I can change it.
I think I can help.
I know that together we can.
