AD LIB

Just love these adjusted billboards. Big commercial adds mess up our
landscapeviews too much allready, screaming for you to buy stuff you don't need.
Really nice how some people do something original with it.

Some even restore the original view. Nice way to show people that all these billboards poison
our landscapes.

Look closely for that last one.

THE AROMA OF A FREE FESTIVAL

"THE AROMA OF A FREE FESTIVAL"
The Free Festivals anno 1970 - 1985

The olfactory senses of the nose can play a major role in stimulating memories of the past. Just sensing a smell of a yew tree takes me back to a holiday in Devon where I spent many happy hours playing, aged five, around a farm yard with the musky perfume of an ancient yew permeated the area around the hay barn.
The aroma of Free Festival was different to any other music festival with the main difference being a wholesome lack of smells related to burger vans, as most free festivals were mainly vegetarian. This lack of fast food in any quantity meant that there was a lot of communal self-catering or free food and much of this was cooked on branch wood fires. The pungent reek of home grown grass or the sweet biting smell of Afgani Black caught your sensory attention as you moved around the site between the camp fires surrounded by happy campers.

Personal hygiene amongst festival goers, if memory serves me right, was of a reasonable standard and many wore musk oil as much as a fashion habit as to disguise any body odours. The midges and mozzies got a bit much some evenings and lit joss sticks were positioned up-wind of the encampment to deter the minute but irritating creatures. The alien smell of disinfectant greeted you as you approached the toilet trench as a wash-the- hands-after bucket stood by the flapping modesty screen while the contents of the trench smelt as they naturally should but no way as bad as at some paying festivals I attended. The dead thin smoke of diesel exhaust from the stage generator mingled with the green chlorophyll scent of crushed grass around the main stage. The fusty smell of stored canvas stretched up on poles after a winter folded in a damp shed and the attractive hunger alarm bell aroma of a vegetable curry with smooth scent of a bubbling pot of brown rice.
I might have not thought about that period, twenty-five years ago, in many months and then my nose catches a scent of wood smoke on the calm evening air and I am transported back to that time and state of mind. - Roger Hutchinson (Source: The Archive: a history of UK rock festivals)

These Free Festivals throughout the 70s and 80s were organized to keep the spirit of the counterculture alive, avoiding the rock mainstream and resisting authorities. The Free Festivals are part of the roots of our current Teknivals. Thorough the early 90s the festivals mutated into raves and travellers gatherings.

Excerpt from OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND by Helen Evans:
The other strand discernible in the early nineties was the convergence of hippie, traveller, squatting and crustie cliques in the summer free festival circuit, for example Glastonbury, Urban Free Festival, and The Hackney Homeless Festival. These witnessed some of the biggest and longest gatherings. For example the week long occupation of public land at Castle Morton in May 1992 was initiated by a nomadic sound system collective called Spiral Tribal and their festival-going followers. By the end of the week numbers had swelled to 50,000 as weekend ravers converged on Avon. These events would be a cross between a rave, a fun fair, a festival, and a pagan event. Collectives began to spring up all over the country such as Exodus, Cool Tan Arts and Rainbow Tribe. These groups would put on raves for free, or to raise money for housing, environmental or arts projects. Ecology, paganism, ancient culture and ethnicity were revived, alongside the appropriation of yuppie icons such as the mobile phone and fax machine which were used for producing sociable raves and at the same time created an atmosphere of social protest.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind is an interesting analysis of rave culture written in 1992.

DRAZER (VINYLMIX)

Would like to share an older studiomix from my partner in crime Drazer [aka Zotti] today! Used to be known for his sharp skills & big record collection. Used to drive all around the country together with a trunk full of vinyl to spin early morning sessions at some party. Used to stay till the last record spins. Use to drive us to where-ever the party was that weekend, because distance did not count. The music was all that counted.
Too bad he's retired!

I miss you fool.

3672 LA FREE STORY

A book on the free tekno movement with photos by Wilfrid Esteve and texts by Sarah De Haro. (French) Unfortunately the book is sold out.

POLITICS AND RAVING

Date: Thu, 30 Mar 1995 12:39:55 -0800 (PST)
Subject: Politics and Raving

While I'm all in favor of people getting involved with trying to influence the "system", I see the role of raving mainly as a promoter of individual mental and spiritual health. If Rave(tm) becomes a sociopolitical movement engaging itself with the world's obvious problems, then it will become part of the current system which is designed to incorporate and absorb such forces, no matter how progressive or revolutionary they may seem.

I really have to disagree. first, raving can be seen as a promoter of COLLECTIVE
mental and spiritual health, which is in itself political, oppositional to a
system based on greed and consumption and with no real understanding of "health."
further, i see raves as TAZs (Temporary Autonomous Zones), where we can practice living as if we are free. i see freedom (the anarchist revolution big techno
potluck shindig!) as a PROCESS, again, where we learn to live and take care of
ourselves as if we are free, in a world we imagine (free of sexism, racism,
heterosexism ... all forms of authoritarian repression). when we organize
parties collectively we learn how work can be done without hierarchies.

in addition, gathering together to create healthy communities in a culture that
seeks to divide us, or give us a false sense of community based on mtv and
consumption, is a radical and political act. creating art and play outside of
the marketplace (renegades and benefits) is a radical and poltical act.

further, raves can be a place where we share information - on health,
spirituality, political and social movements and ideas ... and of course we can
fundraise, which is CLEARLY and example of "rave...engaging itself with the
world's most obvious problems."

every time i rave, i voice my protest against "the system" (who says protests
have to be covered by the mass media-demons?) every minute i spend organizing
parties with a purpose is my protest against a system that sees play either as
superfluous, or as a "leisure-time hobby." NO - raving, right now, gives me LIFE.
work just pays the rent and puts food on the table (and tries to suck all my
life-energy out of me - sigh.)

of course, i'll continue to do the "regular" kind of political work (voting,
marching, letter-writing...)...NOT because i believe this is the way to freedom,
but because we'll get trampled all over if we don't!

so there's my rant for the day. and since we've been making book recommendations
lately, i have to add Hakim Bey's TAZ and IMMEDIATISM (if you try to ignore his
anti-abortion gibberish in TAZ). as well as Starhawk's TRUTH OR DARE.

take care everyone,
monicat

THE DANCE OF REVOLUTION

The dance of revolution is a continuous project, floating free, perpetually changing, always focused. The music it moves to is pure energy, weaving three interdependent melodies: participation, founded on the passion of play; communication, founded on the passion of love; and realization, founded on the passion to create. Refusing the value of appearances, the dance makes itself invisible to those who see only appearances; the spectacle of the commodity cannot defend itself. The dance can never be a closed system, it never mystifies itself; rather, it realizes itself in its own supersession, in the sublime movement of subversion, where a pirouette returns to itself not as itself, not as it was born, but changed, reconceived in a limitless perspective. Subversion devalues each fragmented element in the hierarchy of appearances; each isolated commodity — whether it be inanimate objects or objectified human beings selling themselves in the marketplace — is projected into the significance of the WHOLE, all possible connections are made as we dance closer to the totality of our lives. Subversion is the only language, the only gesture, that bears within it its own critique. Its force is pleasure seeking itself. In the language of subversion we begin to sing, our whole lives begin to move in the rhythm of the song: thus we create the dance: thus the revolution becomes our daily life.

THE SHOCK DOCTORINE

The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism
by the author of No Logo, Naomi Klein

The book argues that the free market policies of Nobel Laureate Milton Friedman have risen to prominence in some countries because they were pushed through while the citizens were reacting to disasters or upheavals. It is implied that some man-made crises, such as the Falklands war, may have been created with the intention of being able to push through these unpopular reforms in their wake.

Visit her website for other writings by Naomi Klein. Here book No Logo focusing on 'brand bullies' has already been featured on our blog. Click here if you are interested.

In addition to the book Naomi Klein created a short film in corporation with Alfonso Cuaron, the director of "Children of Men". To support her message.

SCRATCH - THE DOCUMENTARY

Scratch is a documentary film, directed and edited by Doug Pray. Scratch is a film that explores the world of the hip-hop DJ. From the birth of hip-hop, when pioneering DJ’s began extending breaks on their party records (which helped inspire break dancing and rap), to the invention of scratching and beat-juggling vinyl, to its more recent explosion as a musical movement called turntablism, it’s a story of unknown underdogs and serious virtuosos who have radically changed the way we hear, play and create music. The documentary opens with Grand Wizard Theodore (New York) telling the story of how he first introduced scratching. Throughout the documentary, several artist explains how he/she was introduced to the field of hip-hop and scratch while providing stories and anecdotes of their personal experiences. Those artists include Grand Mixer Q-Bert (title given by Grand Mixer DXT to Q-Bert in the movie), Grand Mixer DXT, Z-Trip, Mix Master Mike, Rob Swift, DJ Premier, Afrika Bambaataa, Jazzy Jay, Cut Chemist, NuMark, DJ Craze, DJ Shadow, DJ Babu and DJ Krush. Madlib and Peanut Butter Wolf also make uncredited appearances at a scratching jam session. Watch the full documentary below.

WASTELAND

Wasteland takes place in a devastated, post-apocalyptic future America. Set one hundred years after a catastrophe known as the ‘Big Wet’, it's the story of Michael and Abi, two characters with unique and unnatural powers, as they search for the fabled land of A-Ree-Yass-I; which legend says is where the Big Wet began.

Their quest will take them thousands of miles across a ruined, hostile land where technology has been forgotten and scavenging is a way of life. Where a relentless sun beats down through a cloudless sky. Where no birds take to the air, no forests carpet the hills. Where the oceans are fetid and poisonous, impossible to cross.

But Michael has been walking this land longer than he can remember. If anyone can beat the odds and survive the journey, Abi believes it's him. With his survival skills and her quick thinking, can they find A-Ree-Yass-I together?

Perhaps. But along the way they'll face betrayal, prejudice, war, revolution and more...

CHANGING TUBES OF YOUR ELECTRIBE

This article includes step-by-step instructions and photos demonstrating how to change and/or upgrade the tubes inside of your Korg Electribe X-series machine.

Fully explained here

THINK.

I was born as a thinker. I’ve spent much of my life thinking about things. Thinking about myself, thinking about others, even thinking about thinking. This is not to say I always think the right things, or that what I think about is always of any use to anyone. My brain isn’t the best brain, and I don’t have a great deal of conventional education.

Nonetheless, I sit and I think. Since an early age, my thoughts led me to believe that there was something funny about the world in which I was living. I started out as a child, interacting with my family, learning from their behavior, thinking about the things they do, the things they say. Garnering from it my basic beliefs about love, kinship, respect, and the value of life.

As my world grew beyond the borders of my immediate family, I began to learn about selfishness, greed, hate. I recognized these things as alien to what I believed “humanity” represented. I had theorized that the only reason human beings had grown beyond the animal world was because of our capacity for great things - Community, peace, love, tolerance. I still firmly believe that these are the foundations for a solid community, and a happy, prosperous life within that group.

When you are born, you are helpless. Unable to perceive the world around you, unable to rectify the situation you’re in. You have fear, but it is mitigated by the fact that you have a loving family to nurture and protect you. Fear and Love. These are the basic emotions we are born with. To simplify it further, even though you don’t understand the feelings you have, the only thing you have the capacity to be afraid of is NOT being loved. You do not KNOW this, but your biology has hardwired you this way. Had you not been loved and cared for, you would have died. When you cry, you are calling out to the ones who love you. What I’m saying is that we are designed to love each other. Without this basic, primal desire for love, we would not have humanity. We would not have a culture at all.

From love comes empathy - The ability to see and feel the emotions of other human beings around you. From empathy sprouts understanding and tolerance. From these, a community can foster peace and tranquility. This, in my humble opinion, is how humanity has achieved great things. How we, as a whole, have risen up to be the stewards of our world. Not mere beasts roaming the plains, but the overseers who work the fields, care for God’s creatures, and nurture all life on this small planet. It is the peace that allowed us to take time to think. With our thoughts, we discover new ways to improve our lives and the lives of those we share our space with.

A child does not know hatred. When you were born, you did not hate. You did not discriminate based on skin colour, class, religion, or culture. You weren’t selfish, as you were not even self-aware. These are unnatural feelings, things you did not consider. That is, until you were taught by someone how to hate. We are born with the capacity for great things, and unfortunately that capacity includes the potential for these negative emotions. They are counter-intuitive to the things that make us great. Selfishness breeds ego. Ego gives us the capacity for materialism and hatred. Materialism because our ego desires the false admiration of others. Hatred comes from the fear that someone else has threatened our ego. These are things you did not know as a child.

I’ve spent my life being confused and conflicted. With all these things planted firmly in my mind - Things I believe to be obvious Truths - I watch the world around me in total chaos. Chaos that seems to be accelerating. This is not to say I live as a Saint, but as I said before, I spend a lot of time thinking. Most of these thoughts are dedicated to how I can raise up the ones I love. To making their lives better, thereby improving my own life with theirs. With that statement, I would also like to clarify that I’m not trying to be selfish, but simply that being part of and nurturing a peaceful, loving community will give you a more peaceful and loving life. This is inevitable.

This, unfortunately, also works with the negative, learned emotions and actions. Even more unfortunately, it seems as though there is a trend in our world pushing us towards these negative, unnatural ways. It seems popular to have the nicest car, the most sexual partners, the biggest house. These things do not provide love or peace. The desire to achieve these things displaces the natural, pushes away love and fosters selfishness. For if you are to HAVE, others must NOT. This creates an imbalance, causes others suffering, creates social classes, distrust, hatred.

There is a great inequality that pervades our society. Instead of caring for one another, we are taught one-upmanship and greed. This allows for us to be taken advantage of. As we grow and are taught, indoctrinated to believe in inequality, in distrust, in competition rather than cooperation, we cry out for someone to care for us. We beg, like children, for someone to give us stability. Those who teach us greed and hatred are the ones who come forward, offering us a solution. “Be with us,” they say. “We will take care of you.” In exchange, we give our labor, loyalty, and servitude. Yet, I know I still feel as though I’m not safe. I’m not living a life of peace by being a member of this invented culture of hate.

Now, after several generations, the “protections” provided to us and the exchange of servitude are enacted upon us when we are born, by default. Do we not get a choice? Could we not solve our problems by being loving and peaceful?

I think we can and will. What do you think?
