THE HUNTER S. THOMPSON SHRINE

The Hunter Thompson Shrine was created on Snowmass on February 20, 2006 (on the one-year anniversary of his death), by a band of his friends and admirers, consisting of five people. They call themselves the "Glorious Leaders of the Underground Movement (GLUM)--The Creators of the Hunter S. Thompson Shrine." They go by the following names: RUSTY HEMATOMA, MISTER Z, R. W. FEATHERSTONE, PHLEGM THROWER, and MR. QUICK. Included in the Shrine are numerous photos, an American Flag, a gloved arm with “Gonzo” written on it, a lizard covered with multi-colored jewels, an air horn, a “Rolling Stone” magazine cover, several newspaper articles, Tibetan prayer flags, The Woody Creeker, a bottle of Mr. Bubbles, and other items.

Every winter on Presidents' Day the GLUM updates the shrine, they also hike each year to the shrine for a camp out on August 20. It is located at the Snowmass ski area, near his home in Woody Creek. On that day in 2005, six months after his death on February 20, his cremated ashes were shot into the sky during a private ceremony at his home in  Aspen, Colorado, by a cannon. It was launched from a 47 meter tower that was topped by a double-thumbed fist clutching a peyote button - the symbol that he used for his campaign when he ran for sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado, as part of a group of citizens running for local offices on the "Freak Power" ticket. The platform included promoting the decriminalization of drugs (for personal use only, not trafficking, as he disapproved of profiteering), tearing up the streets and turning them into grassy pedestrian malls, banning any building so tall as to obscure the view of the mountains, and renaming Aspen "Fat City" to deter investors. Thompson, having shaved his head, referred to the Republican candidate as "my long-haired opponent", as he wore a crew cut. This private ceremony dubbed the "Gonzo blastoff" was held at his home Aspen, Colorado.

In 1978 Thompson & Steadman began to plan his funeral. It was recorded and included in FEAR AND LOATHING IN GONZOVISION (BBC Documentary). It contains several scenes of them planning the event. Thompson told the BBC that wanted his ashes to be launched by a cannon from the monument he designed himself. So eventually during his funural his family and friends made his last wish come true.

It is not very often that we have the opportunity to create a graphic equivalent of a drug fueled rant bringing all of our collective skills to bear. And it is almost unfathomable that we could actually do something like this and benefit a good cause.


The Buck team dug deep, channeling our inner gonzo, to direct and produce this homage promoting Good Books, the online bookseller that passes all its profits through to Oxfam. A big thanks to String Theory in NZ for bringing us this script, Antfood for their amazing audio stylings, to Thor for giving his voice and to all the artists who made this something we are proud of.

The Rum Diary is an upcoming film based on the novel of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson. The film is directed by Bruce Robinson and stars Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. Filming began in Puerto Rico in March 2009. It is currently set to be released on October 28, 2011. - source

Fear and Loathing in Gonzovision (aka Fear and Loathing on the Road to Hollywood) is an interesting documentary from 1978 that follows Hunter S. Thompson and artist Ralph Steadman from Thompson's home in Aspen, Colorado, to Las Vegas, and then to Hollywood. Footage of Thompson and Steadman on the road is interspersed with interviews, clips of President Nixon and audio segments of his book, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Hunter's ashes were fired from a canon at his funeral on 20 August 2005; this film includes scenes of Thompson & Steadman beginning to plan this event.

Produced by the BBC and broadcast as part of their Omnibus series it is also included as a bonus feature on one of the dvd versions of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas starring Johnny Depp.

If the name Ralph Steadman doesn't ring a bell, how about Hunter S. Thompson or "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?"
Ralph Steadman was the artist who did all the original artwork for Hunter S. Thompson and had a huge role in the way the movie for "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" was produced.

 Steadman had a long partnership with the American journalist Hunter S. Thompson, drawing pictures for several of his articles and books. He accompanied Thompson to the Kentucky Derby for an article for the magazine Scanlan's, to the Honolulu Marathon for the magazine Running, and illustrated both Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. Much of Steadman's artwork revolves around Raoul Duke-style caricatures of Thompson: bucket hats, cigarette holder and aviator sunglasses.

TRANSMETROPOLITAN

Transmetropolitan is a post-cyberpunk comic book series written by Warren Ellis with art by Darick Robertson and published by DC Comics. The series was originally part of the short-lived DC Comics imprint Helix, but upon the end of the book's first year the series was moved to the Vertigo imprint as DC Comics cancelled the Helix imprint. It chronicles the battles of Spider Jerusalem, infamous renegade gonzo journalist of the future, an homage to gonzo journalism founder Hunter S. Thompson.

Spider Jerusalem dedicates himself to fighting the corruption and abuse of power of two successive United States presidents; he and his ("filthy") assistants strive to keep their world from turning more dystopian than it already is while dealing with the struggles of fame and power, brought about due to the popularity of Spider via his articles.

"These are the streets of this city, where the New Scum try to live. You and me, and here in these streets are the things that we want: sex and birth, votes and traits, money and guilt, television and teddy bears. But all we've actually got is each other. You decide what that means."

“We live in a monoculture. What does that mean? Well, go out to your street corner. You’ll probably see a Long Pig stand, SPKF on a screen somewhere, an Angry Boy Dylan’s Gun Store. You’ll go into a record store and see new recordings by the usual suspects, maybe a special Space Culture display rack.

Go out onto a streetcorner in London and you’ll see the same thing. Same in Prague. Same in Sao Paulo. Same in Osaka, and Grozny, and Tehran, and Jo’burg, and Hobart. That’s what a monoculture is. It’s everywhere, and it’s all the same. And it takes up alien cultures and digests them and shits them out in a homogeneous building-block shape that fits seamlessly into the vast blank wall of the monoculture.

This is the future. This is what we built. This is what we wanted. It must have been. Because we all had a fucking choice, didn’t we? It is only our money that allows commercial culture to
